Investigación

Las simbiosis entre algas unicelulares e invertebrados son comunes en los mares someros tropicales. En los arrecifes de coral, este tipo de asociaciones mutualistas juega un papel ecológico sumamente importante ya que la fotosíntesis de las algas endosimbiontes es responsable de una buena parte de la producción primaria de la comunidad, contribuye significativamente al metabolismo del hospedero, y esta involucrada en las altas tasas de calcificación de los corales. En el laboratorio dedicamos la mayor parte de nuestros esfuerzos a estudiar los mecanismos que emplean las algas endosimbiontes de invertebrados para modificar su aparato fotosintético respondiendo a variaciones en la disponibilidad de luz, carbono y temperatura. Para estudiar estos mecanismos, empleamos diversas técnicas bioquímicas, biofísicas y fisiológicas.

Durante los últimos 20 años ha incrementado la frecuencia, intensidad y distribución geográfica del fenómeno conocido como blanqueamiento de coral, este fenómeno se manifiesta como una ruptura de la simbiosis y se presenta cuando los corales están expuestos a temperaturas inusualmente elevadas. El blanqueamiento de coral puede resultar en mortalidades masivas de coral y puede ser considerado una manifestación temprana del Cambio Climático Global. Actualmente nos encontramos estudiamos los mecanismos celulares responsables del blanqueamiento de corales, así como las respuestas ante el estrés térmico de distintos dinoflagelados simbiontes de coral. El objetivo de estas investigaciones es el de desarrollar modelos que nos permitan predecir las respuestas de los corales ante la presencia de estrés térmico.

Docencia

Como parte de mis actividades docentes estoy encargado de coordinar el curso "Luz y Fotosíntesis: Curso Avanzado de Productividad Primaria en el Océano". Este curso teórico-práctico se imparte en Puerto Morelos de manera intensiva durante tres semanas en el periodo inter-semestral de invierno con la colaboración de mis colegas del grupo de Fotobiología de la UAPM y del CICESE. Por otro lado participo, en conjunto con otros colegas de la UASA, impartiendo las materias de "Biología Marina" y "Métodos en Investigación Oceanográfica".

Activitidades Académicas

Soy miembro del Sistema Nacional de Investigadores, de la Comisión de Oceanografía de la Academia Mexicana de Ciencias, formo parte de la representación mexicana ante el Comité Científico de Investigación Oceanográfica de UNESCO, y actualmente participo en el grupo de estudios ad hoc sobre indicadores de blanqueamiento de coral y efectos subsecuentes de la Comisión Oceanográfica Intergubernamental de UNESCO. He sido revisor de proyectos para el CONACYT, NSF y NOAA y arbitro en revistas nacionales y extranjeras. Antes de mi incorporación a la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México fui investigador posdoctoral en la Universidad de California e investigador titular en el Departamento de Ecología del Centro de Investigación Científica y Educación Superior de Ensenada.

Research Summary

Symbioses between unicellular algae and invertebrates are common in the shallow waters of tropical oceans. In coral reefs, these mutualistic symbioses play a very important ecological role: photosynthesis by the endosymbiotic algae is responsible for a large fraction of the primary production, contributing to the animal-host nutrition, and for the high calcification rates of corals.

In our laboratory, the primary goal is to study the mechanisms employed by these symbiotic algae to modify their photosynthetic apparatus responding to variations in light and carbon availability and temperature. To achieve this goal we employ diverse biochemical, biophysical and physiological techniques.

During the last 20 yeas there has been a significant increase in the frequency, intensity and geographic range of the phenomenon known as coral bleaching. This phenomenon manifests itself as a disassociation of symbiosis as a result of exposure to elevated temperatures. Coral bleaching may result in massive mortality and it is considered a early manifestation of Global Warming.

Currently we are studying the celular mechanisms responsible of coral beaching, as well as the responses of different species of symbiotic dinoflagellates to thermal stress. The goal of this research is to develope predictive models of the responses of corals to thermal stress.

Teaching & Training

As part of my teaching duties, I am responsible for the course entitled "Light and Photosynthesis: an Advanced Course on Primary Productivity in the Ocean". This intensive 3 week practical course is offered once a year in Puerto Morelos during the winter semester in colaboration with my colleagues of the UAPM´s photobiology group and scientist from CICESE. I also teach parts of the courses on Marine Biology and Methods in Oceanographic Research offered once a year at UASA.

Academic Activities

I am member of the National System of Researchers (SNI), the Oceanography Committe of Mexican Academy of Sciences. I am part of the mexican representation in the Scientific Committe on Oceanographic Research of UNESCO. Currenty I am a member of the ad-hoc study group on coral bleaching indicators and subsequent effects of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commision of UNESCO. I have been a reviewer for CONACYT, NSF, and NOAA, as well as referee for different scientific journals. Before my employment at UNAM, I was a posdoctoral scientist at the University of California, and a senior scientist in the Department of Ecology of CICESE.
